
This special version Mazda Miata is the most outstanding of NB-series Miata roadsters, and one of the most powerful one. The special edition was made by Mazda tuning division Mazdaspeed and features different styling and what is more important, power boost to the engine and other engineering improvements. Only 4 000 copies was made in 2004 and 1 428 in 2005.
Exterior improvements
The car was available in 2 colors – Velocity Red and Titanium Gray. In 2005 another 2 colors was added – Black Mica and Lava Orange. Mazdaspeed edition gets tilted headlamps, 17-inch alloy wheels, different front and rear bumpers, side skirts, fog lights.
Performance
All hardware was improved – new clutch and driveshafts, Mazdaspeed re-tuned suspension with Bilsten shock-absorbers. But the most interesting part is the engine – it remains the same 1.6L 4 cylinder engine as in standard Miata but with turbocharger and intercooler. It boosts 72 extra horsepower (108 vs. 180) to a tiny engine. The power increase helps turbocharged Mazda Miata reach 60 mph (97 km/h) in 6.2 sec and top speed of 126 mph (203 km/h).
The car equipped with 6-speed manual transmission. There was at least 3 versions of turbo Miata for different markets – Mazdaspeed MX-5 Miata for North American market, Mazda Roadster Turbo for Japan and Mazda MX-5 SE for Australia (without Mazdaspeed naming). Australian version’s engine is also downgraded to 162 hp.
